The 14th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on the theme ‘Outcome of COP28: Infrastructure, Policies, and Skills for Tripling Renewables and Accelerating the Energy Transition’ has featured a plenary session on the theme ‘Accelerated Renewable Deployment in Africa.’

AZERTAC’s correspondent dispatched to the UAE capital reports that the meeting featured discussions on the implementation of the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA) imitative launched last year within the framework of COP28.

IRENA-Director General Francesco La Camera, as well as Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE Sheikh Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan addressed the session moderated by 14th IRENA Assembly President, Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure Jimmy Gasore.

During the discussions, panelists pointed out the importance of contextualized support, reiterating the fact that each African country is unique in its needs and priorities. Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Powe
r Development Edgar Moyo emphasized that APRA membership should not merely be seen as support for individual countries, but as a collective effort representing the entire continent of Africa.

Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Energy Herbert Krapa highlighted the importance of investing in power grid infrastructure to ensure the energy transition.

Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission Amani Abou-Zeid and Namibia’s Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy Kornelia Shilunga also joined the discussions.

The event continued with extensive discussions.
