In order to improve the living conditions of elderly citizens and increase their access to government and other services, ASAN Volunteers Organization has launched activities to increase digital knowledge and skills in the use of digital technologies for the elderly people.
According to the State Agency for Public Services and Social Innovations under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ASAN), activities implemented within the framework of “Building society for all ages: promoting wellbeing of the elderly persons in Azerbaijan through active ageing” project implemented jointly by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population (MLSPP) of Azerbaijan and UNFPA aims to educate elderly people on the use of new technologies and e-services.
Initiated by First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva, the project aims to support the state policy aimed at improving the wellbeing of the elderly, ensuring active and healthy lifestyle for them and promoting the idea of active ageing among older persons. ASAN volunteers support and encourage the seniors to spend their spare time more active and meaningful within the framework of the project implemented under the slogan “Let’s ageing actively, add color to our lives”.
In accordance with the ongoing quarantine regime in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, 3379 elderly people attended trainings on the topic of “basic computer skills, “productive ways to spend time on the internet,” “how to pay online,” “how to use smartphones” and other topics on digitalization for remote, single, or small groups in “ASAN service” centers located in Baku and regions.
The world is ageing rapidly. People aged 60 and older make up 12.3 per cent of the global population, and by 2050, that number will rise to almost 22 per cent. Ageing is a triumph of development: People are living longer because of better nutrition, sanitation, health care, education and economic well-being. Although an ageing world poses social and economic challenges, the right set of policies can equip individuals, families and societies to address these challenges and to reap its benefits.
