Azerbaijan Nominates Opposition Member Rafael Huseynov as Parliament Vice-Speaker Candidate


BAKU—The Azerbaijani Parliament has nominated Rafael Huseynov, a member of the opposition, as a candidate for the position of vice-speaker. The nomination was announced during today’s parliamentary session.



According to Trend News Agency, the nomination follows the recent snap parliamentary elections held on September 1 in Azerbaijan. These elections saw significant participation from both local and international observers. A total of 112,749 local observers were registered, with over 65,000 representing various political parties. Additionally, 598 international observers from 51 organizations across 69 countries were registered to monitor the election process.



The elections featured 990 registered candidates, of whom 305 were representatives of 25 different political parties. Notably, 371 candidates were affiliated with political parties but were not officially nominated by those parties. Overall, 676 candidates had political party affiliations.



The results of the snap parliamentary election were validated by the Constitutional Court on September 21, cementing the legitimacy of the electoral process and the subsequent parliamentary activities, including today’s nomination of Rafael Huseynov.
