**Azerbaijan Prepares to Host COP29, Aiming for Consensus on Financial Targets and Showcasing Green Initiatives**

Baku: Azerbaijan is gearing up to host the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku this November, with a focus on reaching a consensus on financial matters and showcasing its transition towards a green economy.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, preparations for COP29 are well underway in Azerbaijan, following the decision made at COP28 to host the conference in Baku. Mukhtar Babayev, involved in the organizational process, emphasized the significance of hosting such a major event, which aligns with Azerbaijan’s goals to act as a bridge in climate negotiations between developed and developing countries, and between different global regions. Azerbaijan aims to leverage its geographical and political position to foster discussions that cater to a broad spectrum of global perspectives.

The conference will serve as a platform for Azerbaijan to demonstrate its shift from an oil and gas-dependent economy to one focused on sustai
nable development and green technologies. Investments are being made in developing sustainable programs and steering the economy towards greater environmental sustainability.

Babayev highlighted the critical nature of reaching a consensus on key priorities at COP29, particularly regarding financial issues. He pointed out the importance of the new collective quantified goal (NCQG), a new financial target set for discussion at the conference, which will involve negotiations with various countries.

Further benefits of hosting COP29 include enhancing Azerbaijan’s global economic influence through its commitment to green projects under the leadership of the President of Azerbaijan. Initiatives such as declaring specific regions as green zones and developing green corridors emphasize the country’s focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly development.

In addition to addressing financial goals, Azerbaijan is also championing the ‘COP Truce Initiative’, urging a global ceasefire during the conference, aki
n to the peace maintained during the Olympic Games. The initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of conflicts and has already seen significant interest from various countries and organizations.

A special focus of the conference will be on helping regions severely affected by climate change, such as Africa and small island developing states (SIDS). The presidency of COP29 has engaged in extensive international diplomacy to address these issues, including providing technical support and ecological monitoring data to vulnerable regions through Azerbaijan’s space agency, Az?rkosmos.

High-level confirmations from various heads of state have been received for the conference, reflecting strong international interest and participation prospects. Azerbaijan has also extended invitations to all nations, including Armenia, promoting an inclusive platform for open dialogue and negotiation.

As Azerbaijan continues its preparations for COP29, the country is positioned to not only advance its environmental and
economic policies but also strengthen its international relationships and leadership on the global stage.
