Azerbaijan Preps for COP29 with Focus on Energy Initiatives

BAKU—Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy is gearing up for the upcoming COP29, with significant preparation underway to address two primary areas of focus aimed at enhancing global energy policies. Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov outlined these initiatives during his address at the 12th Caspian Energy Forum in Baku.

According to Trend News Agency, Zeynalov detailed the ministry’s strategic preparations for COP29, highlighting that the first focus area involves energy initiatives on the agenda of the COP29 presidency, while the second will include a series of energy events organized within the framework of both COP29 and the preliminary meetings. The Deputy Minister emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to advancing three global energy initiatives during the conference: green corridors, energy storage, and energy networks, alongside a global hydrogen declaration.

The Ministry plans to conduct a total of 15 events during the conference, reflecting Azerbaijan’s proactive stance in shaping global energy discussions. This November, Baku will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This decision was confirmed during the plenary meeting at COP28 in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku is expected to become a focal point for global climate discussions, welcoming an estimated 70-80,000 international delegates.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent hazardous human interference with the climate system. The COP serves as the supreme governing body of the convention, which now includes 198 party nations. These meetings, held annually unless decided otherwise, are pivotal in directing international efforts to combat climate change. The first COP took place in March 1995 in Berlin, with its secretariat based in Bonn.
