Azerbaijani CEC Cancels Voting Results at Sumgayit Polling Station Due to Irregularities

SUMGAYIT—The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan has annulled the voting results at a polling station in Sumgayit’s first electoral district following a review of election violations.

According to Trend News Agency, CEC Secretary Arifa Mukhtarova announced the decision during a recent CEC meeting, where a complaint from parliamentary candidate Yasaman Mahmudova was addressed. Mahmudova had requested the annulment of voting results across all polling stations in the district, citing multiple irregularities such as illegal ballots and instances of the same person voting multiple times. Supporting her claim, she provided video and photo evidence of the alleged violations.

Although the CEC found no legal basis to invalidate the results for the entire district, the evidence of irregularities at polling station No. 27 led to the cancellation of its results. CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov highlighted statements from relatives and associates of the complainant asserting the election’s transparency, which did not influence the decision on polling station No. 27. The resolution to invalidate these specific results was put to a vote among the CEC members and passed.

The snap parliamentary election, held on September 1, saw significant participation with 112,749 local observers and 598 international observers from 51 organizations across 69 countries. Among the 990 candidates, 676 were affiliated with political parties, either directly nominated or independently representing them.
