Azerbaijan’s Role in Climate Change Highlighted by EU Ambassador at COP29

BAKU—Azerbaijan’s commitment to addressing global climate challenges was emphasized by EU Ambassador Peter Michalko during a presentation on water security, aligning with the country’s hosting of the upcoming COP29 conference.

According to Trend News Agency, Ambassador Michalko underscored Azerbaijan’s efforts to mitigate water security issues as reflective of its broader commitment to environmental concerns. “The government of Azerbaijan is aware of the importance of water security challenges and is making every effort to address them and will continue to do so. This is also evidenced by Azerbaijan’s desire to play a crucial role in the global battle against climate change by organizing a significant world event—COP29,” he stated during the event.

Michalko highlighted the European Union’s support in enhancing Azerbaijan’s capabilities to manage water resources effectively. “The EU, through numerous regional and bilateral initiatives, is sharing its knowledge and experience with local partners to protect and manage valuable water resources effectively,” he emphasized. This cooperation extends to supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing human capital, improving disability assessment systems, expanding digital connectivity, and implementing innovative programs such as ‘Smart Villages’.

“Our commitment to strengthening resilience and inclusivity in Azerbaijan remains steadfast. The progress we have achieved is a testament to what can be accomplished by working together towards common goals,” Michalko added, illustrating the dynamic partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan in fostering sustainable development and tackling climate issues head-on.
