Azercosmos Launches Climate Action Partnership with Commonwealth Nations

BAKU — Azercosmos, Azerbaijan’s space agency, has initiated a partnership with vulnerable member states of the Commonwealth of Nations, focusing on enhancing climate-related activities through space technology. This collaboration targets primarily small island developing states and other vulnerable nations within the Commonwealth.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the cooperation is part of a memorandum signed jointly by Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth of Nations. Azercosmos has unveiled a comprehensive program designed to help these states analyze and assess climate change impacts using advanced space technology and geographic data. The program includes monitoring drought levels and drought risk with satellite imagery, classifying cultivated areas, conducting complex monitoring of forests, and tracking methane (CH4) concentrations from space.

This initiative, developed by Azercosmos, aims to bolster human capital in the space sector and share Azerbaijan’s expertise in space technology with countries particularly susceptible to climate change effects, many of which have limited or no access to space technology. By leveraging space technology and geographic data, the partnership seeks to enhance climate resilience, improve disaster preparedness, and promote sustainable development among the member states.

The program will also provide a framework for these countries at the upcoming COP29 event in Baku and guide future climate change activities within the Commonwealth. This strategic use of space solutions is intended to serve as a road map for the nations involved, illustrating the critical role of advanced technology in addressing global climate challenges.
