BIG Holds Meeting to Address Kanaky-New Caledonia Election Results

Baku: The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) organized an online meeting on July 6, 2026, focused on the provincial election results in Kanaky-New Caledonia, APA reports. Representatives from Kanaky-New Caledonia, R©union, Mayotte, the Union of the Comoros, and French Guiana, territories affected by French colonialism, participated in the discussions.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Jean-Baptiste Dialle of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front, which advocates for Kanaky-New Caledonia's independence, declared the elections a success for independence supporters. However, he noted that French government policies have eroded trust in the electoral process among the Kanak population, diminishing hopes for achieving independence solely through voting and leading to low voter turnout.

Orlane Taristas from the "Ka Ubuntu" party, which campaigns for R©union's independence, emphasized the significance of the Kanaky-New Caledonia independence supporters' success amid concerns about the electoral process's transparency raised by official Paris.

Dimitri Qenegei, a former political prisoner and pro-independence activist, termed the elections successful and viewed them as a progression in the fight for freedom.

The meeting featured a symbolic flashmob initiated by BIG, supporting the Kanak people and representatives who triumphed in the June 28 elections. Participants showcased slogans like "Freedom for Kanaky" and "Congratulations," expressing solidarity.

In closing, attendees thanked the Baku Initiative Group for highlighting the struggles of peoples under French colonialism on the international stage and for their continued support and solidarity.
