Comoros Union Lawyer Highlights Legal Contradictions in French Colonialism

BAKU — At a conference in Baku discussing “The Illegal Occupation of Mayotte Island by France in the Union of Comoros,” Mohamed Rafsandjani Hassani, a representative and lawyer for the Comoros Union, asserted that French colonialism contradicts France’s own constitution.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Hassani pointed out that the independence referendum for the Comoros islands aligns with Article 53 of the French Constitution, which stipulates that no territory can be integrated into France without the consent of its people. He criticized France for violating this provision through its colonial policies. Hassani emphasized that, per French law and the constitution, overseas territories must be treated distinctly from the metropolitan parts of France, highlighting the legal inconsistencies in France’s treatment of colonial territories.
