EU Appoints Magdalena Grono as New Special Representative for South Caucasus

BRUSSELS — Magdalena Grono, the current Chief Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has been appointed as the European Union’s Special Representative (EUSR) for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, set to take office on November 1, 2024.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Michel has expressed his welcome of Grono’s appointment, highlighting its timing as critical for EU relations with the region. Grono is recognized for her “long-standing experience, extensive knowledge, and contributions” to the area, which have positioned her as a key figure in shaping EU foreign policy, especially concerning the South Caucasus.

Until her tenure begins, Grono will continue her role as Michel’s Chief Diplomatic Advisor, where she plays a significant part in directing the EU’s foreign policy strategies. The EUSR office will ensure the continuity of the mandate until Grono assumes her new responsibilities.

The position was previously held by Toivo Klaar, and Grono’s appointment marks a significant continuation of the EU’s efforts to address and manage the ongoing challenges in the South Caucasus and Georgia.
