Independent journalists for the revision of the law ‘On Media’

On Friday, defenders of freedom of speech in Azerbaijan held a zoom conference on the issue of the application of the register of media and the law ‘On media.’ The participants of the conference, which was attended by more than 20 civil society and media activists, believe that the conditions of registration in the register and the subsequent control of the Media Development Agency over the activities of the media and journalists are actually censorship and aimed at suppressing free voices in Azerbaijan.

The participants of the conference expressed an idea that the members of the Council of Europe and the institutions of the Council of Europe should respect their obligations and principles.

Director of the Turan News Agency Mehman Aliyev recalled that Azerbaijani experts, on the eve of the adoption of the law, spoke out against the adoption of the law as restricting freedom of speech in the country. Consultations were held in Parliament and more than 40 proposals and amendments were submitted. Then the Venice Commission sent an expert examination of the media law, calling for its revision. The same decision was made by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

It is noted that the journalistic community should urge the Council of Europe to implement its decisions and recommendations.

It was proposed to hold actions in Strasbourg and organize meetings with deputies and officials of the Council of Europe in order to clarify the philosophy of the law on media and the situation in the field of media in Azerbaijan
