Kazakhstan Advances Major Gas Pipeline Projects and Sector Reforms


ALMATY: President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev recently met with Sanzhar Zharkeshov, Chairman of the Board of QazaqGaz JSC, to review the national gas company’s achievements and ongoing projects over the first nine months of 2024, as reported by Trend News Agency.

According to Trend News Agency, during the meeting, President Tokayev was briefed on the completion of significant investment projects and the execution of initiatives intended to boost Kazakhstan’s gas transit capabilities. Notably, the construction of the second line of the “Almaty – Baiserkent – Talgar” gas pipeline has been successfully completed, and the gas infrastructure for CHPP-2 and CHPP-3 in Almaty has been established, which is expected to enhance energy efficiency in the region.

Further updates included the commencement of a new main gas pipeline project linking Taldykorgan and Usharal, as well as the modernization of the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline system, which aims to increase the gas transit capacity to Uzbekistan. Zha
rkeshov emphasized that these developments are vital in light of the rapid increase in domestic gas consumption.

The chairman also reported on the attraction of foreign investments for geological exploration in the gas sector, which includes a significant 100-percent carry financing agreement with Chevron for projects in the Aktobe region. These efforts are complemented by collaborations with the ministries of energy and national economy to enhance the investment appeal of Kazakhstan’s gas sector, focusing on ensuring competitive tariffs and wholesale gas prices.

At the end of the meeting, President Tokayev issued directives to ensure a stable gas supply for the population and the economy throughout the heating season, underlining the importance of advancing reforms and expanding the capacity of the gas transportation system to accommodate the growing demand.
