Members of EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee hail Azerbaijan’s efforts to improve living conditions of refugees and IDPS

A delegation of EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee has hailed Azerbaijan’s efforts to improve social conditions of refugees and internally displaced persons and to address their housing problems, as they met with refugees and IDPs in Masazir settlement of Absheron district.

The EU delegation included Finnish Member of the European Parliament and representative of Greens/EFA Group Heidi Hautala, member of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Anneli JA�A�tteenmA�ki, secretary of the Committee Florian Carmona and Advisor to the European Conservatives and Reformers Group Else Kulegem.

They were accompanied by deputy chairman of Azerbaijans State Committee for Refugees and IDPs Fuad Huseynov and head of Zangilan Region Executive Authority Ramiz Hasanov. They thanked the EU delegation for their visit which aimed at getting acquainted with social conditions of the citizens who have been living as IDPs for many years as a result of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

They highlighted the causes and consequences of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and strongly condemned the fact that Azerbaijan was subjected to military aggression by Armenia.

They said that 20% of Azerbaijan’s territory, in particular Nagorno-Karabakh and 7 surrounding regions were occupied, the policy of ethnic cleansing was conducted in these areas and over one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced persons.

Then the EU delegation visited Zangilan secondary school N 33 and spoke with teachers there.

The EU delegation were informed about the fact that in order to improve the living conditions of refugees and IDPs living in difficult conditions, 97 modern-type settlements equipped with all necessary social and technical infrastructure have been built in various parts of the country and 265,000 people have been relocated to these settlements.
