Middle Corridor Touted as Strategic Alternative to Traditional Maritime Routes

BAKU—During the “International Transport Corridors in the Black and Caspian Seas” session at the Black Sea-Caspian Freight Forum 2024, Irakli Danelia, Business Development Manager for MAERSK in Central Asia and the Caucasus, highlighted the Middle Corridor as a formidable alternative to long-established maritime trade routes.

According to Trend News Agency, Danelia emphasized the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor amid global economic uncertainties. “In the context of global economic turbulence, international logistics operators are focusing on the Middle Corridor—a key project aimed at expanding the mid-border to enhance the reliability and stability of transport routes in Western Europe. This project is seen as a strong alternative to traditional maritime routes,” he stated.

The Middle Corridor, which links China’s container rail freight transportation networks with the European Union via Central Asia, the Caucasus, Turkey, and Eastern Europe, offers several advantages. These include effective logistics solutions, comprehensive ‘single window’ services, and high capacity, making it an appealing option for market participants and institutions. The corridor connects ferry terminals of the Caspian and Black Seas with railway systems extending through several countries, facilitating increased cargo traffic not only to and from Turkey but also across Europe.

Danelia also noted challenges such as the need for improved digitalization but underscored the corridor’s unique opportunities, such as real-time container tracking that enhances the reliability and transparency of transport operations. “One of the key services is the ability to track containers in real-time, significantly enhancing the reliability and transparency of transport operations. This opens up additional prospects for clients at both the shipping and receiving stages,” he added.

The Middle Corridor’s efficiency in moving cargo from China to Europe, typically within 20-25 days, positions it as a viable and competitive route in the global logistics landscape.
