New epicenter of bird flu outbreak found in Japan

Japanese authorities have discovered a new epicenter of bird flu in Miyazaki Prefecture and have begun the process of culling some 100,000 chickens, according to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, APA reports.

Authorities have addressed the avian influenza outbreak after farm workers in the town of Kwaminami discovered the deaths of several chickens and, following genetic analysis, discovered a highly contagious strain of avian influenza.

The authorities decided to ban the transport of chickens and eggs within a radius of 3 kilometers around the farm, where foci of the disease were found, and also banned the transport of chickens and eggs on the territory.

Yesterday, Monday, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture announced the culling of almost 10 million birds in poultry farms, setting a record for the highest number of bird flu cases nationwide.

Experts attribute this to the earlier than usual arrival of migratory birds, which began at the end of September last year, and the spread of the virus in different regions.
