In jail N1, pressure is again exerted on Polad Aslanov, the editor of the website, his wife Gulmira Aslanova wrote on her facebook page.

“While other prisoners easily can speak with their loved ones, Polad every time faces difficulties,” Gulmira Aslanova notes.

She said that on April 30, the head Emin Hasanov did not allow him to use the bathhouse.

“This ban followed after the staff of the International Committee of the Red Cross visited Polad. Thus, the authorities send a message that “if you publicize the problems in prison, you will have problems,” Gulmira Aslanova further writes.

The attempts to get comments from the Penitentiary Service were futile.

* On November 16, 2020, the court found Polad Aslanov, the founder of the website, guilty of espionage for Iran by the court and sentenced him to 16 years in prison. The state prosecutor asked to sentence him to 17 years.

Aslanov was arrested on June 12, 2019 and charged under Article 274 of the Criminal Code (high treason). The investigation claims that Aslanov recruited fellow journalists and persuaded them to cooperate with the Iranian special services. Aslanov denied all charges, saying he was being prosecuted for exposing corruption. International organizations condemned his arrest, calling for the release of Aslanov.
