Premier Draghi calls for new coalition pact in name of Italians

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Wednesday called for a new coalition pact able to fully support his government and allow it to continue its reforming action, as Italians are asking, according to Anadolu Agency.

Addressing the Senate on the political crisis that split his ruling coalition, leading to his resignation – then rejected by Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella – Draghi said his call was mirroring the ones that came from many sectors of the Italian society, including thousands of mayors.

“The only way, if we want to stay together, is to rebuild this pact, with courage, altruism and credibility,” Draghi told senators. “Italians, above all, are asking for it.”

The crisis started when the 5-Star Movement, a key partner in the ruling coalition, walked out of a key confidence vote in the Senate last Thursday, forcing the premier to acknowledge the irreversible collapse of the coalition.

In his Senate speech, Draghi stressed that his government needs a “national unity majority” to successfully pursue an ambitious program of reforms, necessary to obtain the much-needed European resilience funds.

Draghi’s speech was interrupted a few times by long applauses, but the 5-Stars dissidents – who are still mulling how to act in the confidence vote set for Wednesday evening – never clapped their hands.

Another party of the ruling coalition, the right-wing League, reserved a cold reception to Draghi’s speech.

The Italian premier will also address the Lower House on Thursday, where a second confidence vote will be held.

The first test in the Senate, however, will be determinant to understand if the government will obtain a wide-enough majority to convince Draghi to remain in place and continue to lead the country until new elections next year.
