SHAH ALAM, May 15 (Bernama) — After assisting Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) to claim the FA Cup, team captain Safiq Rahim aims to assist the Southern Tigers to qualify for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League (ACL).
The national midfielder, who had won almost all trophies in the Malaysian League, also hoped to play at Asia’s top tier football club competition before he retired.
“I have added the FA Cup into my collection of championships and I hope such victories would continue…I hope the team will rake in more titles in future,” Safiq told a media conference after the FA Cup final at Shah Alam Stadium, Saturday night.
JDT emerged as FA Cup champions for the first time after edging PKNS FC 2-1 in the final.
In the match, Argentinean striker Gabriel Miguel Guerra opened the score for PKNS FC through a penalty at the sixth minute before JDT equalised via another penalty taken by Safiq in the 16th minute while Jorge Pereyra Diaz scored the winning goal for JDT in the 35th minute.
Sharing the same views was JDT goalkeeper Izham Tarmizi Roslan who was determined to assist the Southern Tigers to defend its Super League Cup and the AFC Cup titles, apart from winning Malaysia Cup for the first time this season.
For JDT midfielder, Hariss Harun, the victory would be a major boost for Southern Tigers players to create even more success stories this season.
“Of course, I’m happy with the victory and I believe we have the potential to land more trophies but we would take one match at a time,” the Singapore national added.
