This year at the Eurovision song contest Azerbaijan will be presented by the singer Samira Efendi with a composition called “Mata Hari”.
The country’s Public Television reports that the composition was authored and produced by Amy van der Wel, Luuk van Beers and Tony Cornelissen from the Netherlands. The song “Mata Hari” won the national selection among 229 compositions by Azerbaijani and foreign authors.
The composition is based on ethnic motives using traditional Azerbaijani musical instruments zurna (wind instrument) and nagara (drum), as well as the national dance “Yalli”.
The song celebrates the power of a woman who lives in a complex world, defending herself from the forces of evil, the singer said.
Efendi was supposed to represent Azerbaijan at Eurovision 2020, but the competition was canceled due to the pandemic.
Azerbaijan made its debut at Eurovision in 2008. The best achievement of Azerbaijani performers at the Eurovision Song Contest is the victory at the competition in Dusseldorf in 2011, which was brought to Azerbaijan by Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal. Their victory allowed Baku to host Eurovision 2012. The current competition will take place in May in Rotterdam.
