Specially created commission to check seismic resistance of new houses – Cabinet

A specially created state commission will check the seismic resistance of all new houses. The head of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov said in an interview.

According to him, the strongest earthquakes in Turkey and Syria «once again drew the attention of our government, the head of our state Sadyr Japarov to the construction industry.»

«Unfortunately, for 30 years we have been engaged in the democratic construction of Kyrgyzstan: about six presidents, 33 governments, we had no time to look back at all these sides. But our builders are great, they kept up the construction standards, which were laid down in the Soviet era. We also have engineers and supervisory authorities. Despite this, we have created a working state commission, which will more closely, through the prism of this tragedy, study all new houses built over the past 10-20 years for the seismic resistance,» the official said.

He also noted that a seismologist became the President of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic.

«More than 95 percent of our country is mountains. We have almost 3,000 small earthquakes, and there are also more serious ones — with a magnitude of 4.5-5 on the borders with neighbors and on the territory of our country. Therefore, we are waiting for recommendations from science and are starting to take practical measures aimed at reducing the impact of disasters, including earthquakes, on our citizens,» Akylbek Japarov added.

The head of state does not share the optimism of the Chairman of the Cabinet. Sadyr Japarov previously criticized the quality of high-rise buildings built over the past 10 years.
