TAP Advances Hydrogen Readiness with New Pipeline Testing Phase

TAP AG Consortium announces further testing for hydrogen compatibility in its pipeline infrastructure.

According to Trend News Agency, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) consortium has initiated additional tests on its pipeline materials to ensure hydrogen readiness. The consortium had previously confirmed TAP’s capability to transport a hydrogen blend following a study in 2021. “Having invested in developing the necessary test facilities, we are currently conducting tests on pipeline materials. We are on schedule to receive the initial results for the offshore pipeline during Q3 2024. The results will be assessed, and we anticipate carrying out further testing during Q4 2024,” stated the consortium.

TAP, which transports natural gas from the Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea to Europe, is an 877 km pipeline connecting with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Turkish-Greek border in Kipoi. It traverses Greece, Albania, and the Adriatic Sea before reaching Southern Italy. This strategic infrastructure helps supply gas to Southeastern European countries through interconnectors such as the Interconnector Greece Bulgaria (IGB), which began its commercial operations in October 2022, providing Caspian gas to Bulgaria.

The consortium, comprised of bp, SOCAR, Snam, Fluxys, and Enagás, each holding a 20% stake, continues to enhance the pipeline’s capabilities to support future energy needs.
