The establishment of a Free Trade Zone (FTA) in Ardabil will expand economic ties between Iran and Azerbaijan and further improve the social situation in the border areas of both countries.

The statement came from the governor of Iran’s Ardabil province, Akbar Behnamju, AZERTAC reported. He said that the project to establish ATZ was approved by the Iranian government and parliament. The project will be implemented after approval by the Committee on Economy and Infrastructure of the Council of Experts.

The governor noted that the establishment of a joint industrial park between Iran and Azerbaijan in Ardabil province is a new idea and has not been among other countries. According to him, a project has been prepared to connect Ardabil and other regions by rail. There are also plans to connect Ardabil to the Qazvin-Rasht-Astara (Iran) -Astara (Azerbaijan) railway in the future.

Bahnamju said that last year the value of trade turnover through the Bilasuvar customs increased by 70 percent to $ 250 million.
