The EU spent 3.85 billion euros on Azerbaijani gas imports in January-July

In January-July 2023, the countries of the European Union (EU) – Italy, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania increased gas imports from Azerbaijan by 6.1% compared to the same period last year, to 282,013 thousand terajoules. According to the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), the cost of gas imported from Azerbaijan to the EU countries amounted to 3.85 billion euros (a decline of 44.9% year-on-year). In July, the EU countries reduced gas imports from Azerbaijan by 8.3% to 40,138 thousand TJ, having allocated 337.417 million euros for these purposes (a decline of 74.7%). According to Eurostat, in 2022, EU countries imported natural gas from Azerbaijan for 15.599 billion euros (an increase of 4 times over the year). In 2022, Azerbaijan increased gas exports by 18% to 22.3 bcm, supplies to Europe amounted to 11.4 bcm (+39%). In 2023, gas exports from Azerbaijan are planned at the level of 24.5 bcm, of which about 12 bcm are to Europe.
