“ACWA Power” has adjusted timing to commission Khyzy-Absheron wind power plant

“ACWA Power” (Saudi Arabia) will put into operation a 240 MW Khyzy-Absheron wind power plant in Azerbaijan in 2025, the press release of the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan says following the visit of Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov to Saudi Arabia. On May 24, the Minister met with the Chairman of the Board of “ACWA Power” Mohammed Abunayan. “During the meeting, the parties discussed the state of affairs on the construction of the Khyzy-Absheron wind plant with a capacity of 240 MW, as well as the construction of wind farms on sea and land with a total capacity of 2.5 GW and the creation of energy storage systems. The parties reviewed the action plan and deadlines for the implementation of the Khyzy-Absheron project. Issues arising from the signed contracts were discussed and the issue of accelerating the construction of the station was agreed upon. It is stated that the Khyzy-Absheron power plant “will be put into operation in 2025,” the message says. Previously, it was assumed that the Khyzy-Absheron wind plant would be launched in 2024. No reasons for the postponement were reported. It must be recalled that the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan signed an executive contract with the Saudi company “ACWA Power” on January 9, 2020 in Baku for the construction of a wind power plant with an installed capacity of 240 MW. In December 2020, an “Investment Agreement” was signed between the Ministry of Energy and this company, and an “Agreement on Purchase and Sale of Energy” and an “Agreement on Connection to the Distribution Network” were signed with “Azerenergy” OJSC for the implementation of this project. As a part of the project, 40 turbines with a capacity of 6 MW each will be installed. Of these, 17 wind turbines will be installed in the village of Pirekyushkul in the Absheron region and 23 turbines in the village of Sitalchai in the Khyzy region. At that, the implementation of the project is carried out on the principle of build -own – operate (construction – ownership – operation). The cost of the project is $300 million, which will be invested by “ACWA Power”. The power plant will be able to generate 1 billion kWh of electricity annually, saving up to 220 million cubic meters of gas for the country.
