Spain defeat Croatia 3-0 in Group B game at EURO 2024

Spain defeated Croatia 3-0 in the Group B clash at the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship (EURO 2024) on Saturday, Anadolu Agency reports.

Spanish forward Alvaro Morata netted with a low shot after breaking the offside trap in the 29th minute at Olympiastadion.

Just three minutes later, Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz scored another one with an accurate low shot, after eliminating several defenders with his good dribbling.

Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol missed chance to score in the mouth of the goal in the 41st minute.

Veteran Spanish defender Dani Carvajal tallied another one in the 47th minute, before the end of the first half, evaluating young star Yamine Lamal’s cross.

Rodri’s challenge on Bruno Petkovic caused a penalty kick to Croatia in the 78th minute. Despite Spanish goalie Simon saved the initial penalty kick of Perkovic, he scored in the second attempt but the referee later cancelled the spot kick after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check and the game continued as 3-0.

Title holders Italy to play Albania in their EURO 2024 group opener on Saturday

Title holders Italy will play the underdogs from Albania in their UEFA EURO 2024 group opener on Saturday, according to Anadolu Agency.

The EURO 2024 will kick off Friday with host country Germany playing Scotland in Group A in Munich in the tournament.

One of the leading football nations on the globe, Italy, who won the EURO 2020 title in London, will meet Albania in a Group B match that will kick off at 1900GMT at BVB Stadion Dortmund.

Both sides have met four times before this summer’s EURO as Italy won all of their matches against Albania.

Called the Azzurri, Italy, which are also EURO regulars, won the title twice in 1968 and 2020. They were the runners-up in 2000 and 2012. It will be Italy’s 11th EURO appearance.

Albania qualified twice for the European football tournament. They made their EURO debut in 2016 but were eliminated in the group stage in France.

Coached by former Arsenal and Barcelona left-back Sylvinho, Albania do not have big names in their squad but disciplined teamwork may take th
em to the next stages in Germany.

Saturday will also see Spain vs. Croatia in Group B, named the “Group of Death” for its high-profile competitors.

The match at Berlin’s Olympiastadion will begin at 1600 GMT.

Former world champions Spain are seeking a record-breaking fourth EURO triumph this summer. The Spanish national team last won the EURO 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.

Luka Modric-led Croatia, the FIFA World Cup silver and bronze medalists, eye the latter stages in the European championship.

Real Madrid’s experienced midfielder Modric, 38, is set to appear in his fifth EURO.

Once part of Yugoslavia, Croatia qualified for all European championships except the EURO 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Croatia made their debut in the EURO in 1996 and their best performances were in the quarterfinals in 1996 and 2008.

Switzerland beat Hungary 3-1 in Group A match of EURO 2024

Switzerland beat Hungary 3-1 in the Group A match of the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship (EURO 2024) on Saturday, according to Anadolu Agency.

Forward Kwadwo Duah drew the first blood with a calm shot in the 12th minute in his second international appearance for Switzerland at the Cologne Stadium.

With a screamer from 23 meters (75 feet), Swiss midfielder Michel Aebischer scored the second goal in the 45th minute, just before the end of the first half.

Hungary’s Barnabas Varga’s missed the goal by inches with a header in the 62nd minute, but then he found the net to take one goal back with a low header in the 66th minute.

Swiss forward Breel Embolo lobbed over Hungary goalie Peter Gulacsi to net the third goal of his team in the 93rd minute.

Switzerland are at the second spot in Group A, behind Germany with a goal difference, while Hungary are placed third with zero points.

Hosts Germany beat 10-man Scotland 5 – 1 in UEFA EURO 2024 opener

Host nation Germany defeated a 10-man Scottish squad 5 – 1 in the EURO 2024 opener on Friday, according to Anadolu Agency.

Florian Wirtz scored the first goal of the tournament in the 10th minute from close range, assisted by Joshua Kimmich at Munich Football Arena in Group A.

Germany doubled the lead when Jamal Musiala made a right-footed goal in the penalty box nine minutes later.

After just four minutes, Germany was awarded a penalty when Musiala was brought down but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) came to Scotland’s rescue.

The decision was overturned after a VAR check determined the foul on Musiala took place outside of the penalty area and a freekick was awarded.

Germany was given a penalty in the 44th minute following a VAR check, with Ryan Porteous receiving a straight red card for a wild challenge on Ilkay Gundogan.

Kai Havertz converted the penalty to make it 3 – 0 and the first half ended with the host country enjoying a comfortable lead.

Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench in the 63rd min
ute to add a goal in the 68th minute.

Borussia Dortmund Fullkrug scored another for Germany in the 76th minute but that was disallowed by VAR due to an offside call.

Scotland’s only goal came from German defender Antonio Rudiger, who dropped the ball into the net at the far post in the 87th minute.

Emre Can made a long-range finish to make it 5 – 1 in stoppage time.

Azerbaijan announces its flag bearer for 2024 BRICS Games

Azerbaijan has announced its flag bearer for the international multi-sport event ‘BRICS Sports Games Kazan 2024’ scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia on June 12-23.

Ziya Mammadzada, silver and bronze medallist of the Amber Oars international regatta, gold medallist of the President-Cup-2015 international regatta, was named the country’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the competition.

The international multi-sport event will bring together about 5,000 athletes from the BRICS countries and invited states. Participants will compete in 29 sports vying for 387 sets of prizes in Kazan.

A total of 97 Azerbaijani sportsmen will join 11 sports disciplines, including rowing, canoeing, fencing, judo, table tennis, karate, sambo and different types of wrestling.

Spain’s Valencia FC sign Macedonian keeper Stole Dimitrievski

Valencia CF have reached an agreement for the signing of Stole Dimitrievski through to June 30, 2026, according to the official website of the club.

The Macedonian goalkeeper, 30, becomes a new Valencia CF player after playing six seasons at Rayo Vallecano, where he has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in LALIGA EA Sports thanks to his good performance and safety under the posts.

Dimitrievski, an international with his national team and with Spanish passport, arrives at Mestalla after playing 127 official matches in the First Division and joins the team’s goalkeeping roster to bring reliability and experience to Valencia CF’s squad.

He will be presented to the media as a new Valencia CF player once he joins the team’s pre-season training stage.
