The Government of Azerbaijan plans to implement projects in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) to create new energy facilities in the field of renewable energy sources (RES) with a total capacity of 1,500 MW, Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Soltanov said. “NAR has a rich potential of solar energy and there are plans to turn Nakhchivan into a center of “green energy”. Foreign partners are planning to implement investment projects in the field of “clean” energy with a total capacity of 1,500 MW on the territory of Nakhchivan,” Soltanov said at a forum on “green” energy in Baku last week. The Deputy Minister also noted that a significant part of the “green” energy created in Azerbaijan can be exported to Turkey and Europe. “Currently, the Ordubad hydroelectric power station (with a capacity of 32 MW) and the Tivinskaya hydroelectric power station of the derivational type (with a capacity of 15.6 MW) are being built in the NAR on the Araz River. In Nakhchivan, in some years, water energy was used more than gas in electricity generation, and this indicator can sometimes exceed 50% of the total energy production. Another feature of the NAR is direct access to the Turkish market, i.e., without the mediation of other countries and, accordingly, without additional costs,” he said.
