PACE winter session kicks off in hybrid format in Strasbourg

The winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), to be held from 24 to 28 January, has today started in a hybrid manner in the city of Strasbourg, France.

Members of the Azerbaijani delegation to the PACE are attending the session.

During the January 2022 part-session, the Assembly will elect the President and Vice-Presidents of the Parliamentary Assembly.

Chairperson of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić will also address the parliamentarians. The Assembly will hold its usual exchange of views with the Italian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers. Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić will present her communication to the Assembly.

Debates on combating rising hate against sexual minorities in Europe and on alleged violations of their rights in the Southern Caucasus, on business and values in football governance with an intervention by FIFA President Giovanni Infantino, and on the role of the media in times of crisis, are among highlights of the 2022 Winter Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Also on the agenda are debates on the role of the media in times of crisis, the EU pact on migration and asylum seen from a human rights perspective, children’s right to be heard in a democracy and on climate change, enforced disappearances on Council of Europe territory.

On 27 January the Assembly will hold a special event to mark the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The event will be followed by a debate on the Observatory on History Teaching in Europe.

The Assembly will decide its final agenda at the opening of the session.

Several injured in shooting at German university

Several people have been injured in a shooting at a university campus in Heidelberg, southwestern Germany, police said on Monday, according to Anadolu Agency.

The lone gunman is dead, and there is no further threat to the public, the police said in a statement,

The incident occurred in Neuenheimer Feld, one of the three campuses at Heidelberg University, which includes a medical school and natural sciences faculty.

Azerbaijani music night held in Tbilisi

Azerbaijani music night has been held at the Azerbaijani Cultural Center named after Mirza Fatali Akhundov in Tbilisi.

Carpets, national musical instruments and handmade dolls were exhibited as part of the event.

The purpose of the concert was to demonstrate Azerbaijan’s rich culture in Tbilisi and to develop friendly and cultural relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Pandemic tears ‘striking hole’ in German economy

The COVID-19 pandemic has so far cost the German economy €350 billion, new data published on Sunday by the German Economic Institute shows. According to Euroactiv, the government lowered its growth forecast for 2022.

The bulk of the country’s economic losses since the start of the pandemic have been due to a slump in private consumer spending. Consumers have spent less on activities like outdoor dining and cultural events due to lockdown measures and cautious behaviour, the study’s authors explained.

Apart from shrunken consumption and investments, interruptions in global value chains have significantly impacted as additional border controls impeded imports and exports.

On Friday, the government significantly lowered its growth forecast for 2022.

Gulnara Khalilova presents samples of Azerbaijani national clothes to museum of International Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation

President of the International Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation Gunay Afandiyeva has met with the famous fashion designer, head of the Center for national clothing of Azerbaijan, Doctor of Philosophy in Art History Gulnara Khalilova.

The meeting discussed joint projects implemented to promote the rich traditions and culture of Azerbaijan and the Turkic world as a whole. Gulnara Khalilova presented the organizationˈs museum with samples of Azerbaijani national clothing specially prepared for the Foundation.

In November last year, within the framework of joint cooperation in the International Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation the presentation of the collection of national clothes “Karabakh” by Gulnara Khalilova, consisting of clothes samples from the Karabakh region, was held. The collection originates from the epic “Kitabi – Dada Gorgud”, one of the oldest written monuments of the Turkic world, and embodies the national traditions and customs that have developed over the centuries.

The national costumes reflect 12 historical cities of Karabakh – Aghdam, Aghdara, Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Khankandi, Khojali, Khojavand, Kalbajar, Gubadli, Lachin, Shusha, Zangilan. The presentation was dedicated to the day of the Glorious Victory won by the liberation of the historical lands of Azerbaijan from occupation. The event was attended by prominent state, public and cultural figures of Azerbaijan, ambassadors, heads of international organizations.

KOBIA, Israel-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce and Industry discuss cooperation opportunities

Chairman of the Board of the Small and Medium Business Development Agency of Azerbaijan (KOBIA) Orkhan Mammadov has met with President of the Israel-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Alex Kaplun.

Mammadov noted that the agency is interested in developing relations between the two countries` relevant authorities.

The sides discussed bilateral cooperation between the agency and the chamber, and opportunities for the organization of joint events.
