5.2-magnitude quake hits Auckland Islands, New Zealand

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 jolted Auckland Islands, New Zealand region at 04:24 GMT on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, according to Xinhua.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 49.8839 degrees south latitude and 163.1968 degrees east longitude.

Olympics-Beijing Games organiser says 32 new COVID cases on Feb. 1

A total of 32 new COVID-19 infections was found among Olympic Games-related personnel on Feb. 1, the organising committee of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics said on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Fifteen were among new airport arrivals, it said on the Games’ official website, while 17 were among those in the “closed loop” bubble that separates all event personnel from the public, six of them either athletes or team officials.

Training and Educational Center of Azerbaijani Army hosts event on occasion of Youth Day

A meeting of the youth of the Azerbaijan Army with the participation of the personnel of the military units of the Baku garrison, members of Shehid (Martyr) families and war veterans was held at the Training and Educational Center of the Azerbaijan Army, the Ministry of Defense told AZERTAC.

First, memory of national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev, and Shehids (Martyrs) was honored with observing a minute of silence.

Delivering speech at the event, First Deputy Minister of Defense – Chief of the General Staff of the Azerbaijan Army, Colonel General Karim Valiyev conveyed greetings and congratulations of the Minister of Defense to the participants.

Colonel General Karim Valiyev noted that the state youth policy, founded by the great leader Heydar Aliyev has left a deep mark on the development of Azerbaijani youth, and this policy is being successfully continued by President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev.

It was noted that the President pays great attention to improving the knowledge and skills of young people, their patriotic education, studying abroad, as well as, establishment and development of youth organizations.

“Preparing young people for military service, their intellectual, physical and moral education on the basis of national and moral values has always been in the center of attention of the President. It was love for the Motherland that prompted the Azerbaijani youth to join the battles for the liberation of our lands and the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity,” said the Chief of the General Staff.

He stressed that it is a great honor for Azerbaijani youth to serve in the Azerbaijan Army and they accomplish all the tasks they are assigned with dignity. “Our youth serving in the army, as a leading force of society, are deeply aware of their sacred duty to the motherland and the people. Thanks to the high professionalism of officers and soldiers serving in trench and combat positions, our country`s land, sea and airspace are reliably protected.”

In the end, the Chief of the General Staff wished the army youth success and new achievements in the service on behalf of the leadership of the Ministry of Defense.

Iran’s Parliament suspended as 47 lawmakers test positive for COVID

The Iranian parliament has suspended its public sessions because at least 47 lawmakers have come down with Covid-19 while about a dozen have been hospitalized, according to Iran International.

Nezam Mousavi, a member of the presidium, said on Monday that 47 MPs and about 30 employees of the legislative body have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Mousavi did not say how many are in hospital but another member of the presidium, Alireza Salimi, has said on Sunday that 10 lawmakers have been hospitalized with complications.

According to senior lawmaker Mojtaba Yousefi, the public sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday were cancelled, except the two-hour sessions for the budget review committee.

He added that the parliament will hold its sessions in three different groups as of the next week.

Jalas Rashidi Kouchi, another lawmaker, on Sunday criticized parliament members who attended the Saturday session although they had tested positive for the virus.

“No justification is acceptable for endangering the health of others,” he said in a tweet.

Another outbreak among the MPs suspended the parliament for two weeks in April.

Since the start of the pandemic in Iran, several lawmakers and former MPS have died from the coronavirus.

Iran’s Health Minister Bahram Einollahi announced the start of the sixth wave of the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday as hospitals report increasing number of referrals related to the highly infectious Omicron variant.

Official: Foreigners arriving in Azerbaijan for hunting will be divided into three categories

“Foreign citizens, who arrive in Azerbaijan for hunting will be divided into three categories. These will be green, yellow, and red categories,” Chairman of Nature and Hunting Tourism Association Ramin Zamanov said.

“Those, included in the green category, hunt and return under a license and do not violate any law: “Those, included in yellow category, certainly tend to violate a law. Those, who are included in the red category, concretely violate laws and damage ecology seriously. We will present information on the category to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources in order to facilitate control,” Ramin Zamanov added.

Smart Karabakh hackathon to be held as part of TEKNOFEST

A unique opportunity has been created for students, startups and entrepreneurs who want to be closely involved in Karabakh’s revival programme to present their innovative projects on the Smart City concept at the TEKNOFEST Aerospace and Technology Festival, the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport told AZERTAC.

TEKNOFEST Aerospace and Technology Festival will be held for the first time in Baku by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 26 –29 May this year. The main purpose of the TEKNOFEST, which has become an international brand, is to popularize the fields such as aviation, space industry and digital economy among young people, promote entrepreneurship in these fields, reveal the knowledge and skills of young engineers through competitions organized within the festival, as well as present national technologies to the general public.

Smart Karabakh hackathon is one of the most interesting competitions to be held as part of the festival in Baku.

Registration for the Smart Karabakh hackathon to be held as part of the Smart City concept which includes the Internet of Things (IoTs), cloud technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning and other cutting-edge technologies, has already begun. The hackathon covers areas such as education, agriculture, transport, household, energy consumption, water consumption, environment and security.

The Smart City is characterized by a better understanding of operations within the city, the ability to control them and the optimization of limited resources. Smart Karabakh is also seen as a means of improving operational efficiency through the use of Smart City information and communication technologies, sharing the database with relevant agencies and improving the welfare of the population by providing better government services to citizens.

As part of this competition, innovative solutions are offered to the population in various fields through the Internet of Things (IoTs) technology using various software, user interfaces and a communication network.

IoT technology is one of the most important solutions in the Smart City concept. IoT is a network designed to communicate and exchange information between interconnected devices. The data collected from devices is collected on cloud technologies or physical servers, optimized by the private and public sectors and used for convenience of the population within the Smart City. These solutions are also found in the household chores, in the optimal construction of urban infrastructure and in a number of other areas.

The Smart Karabakh Hackathon has a prize fund for young people who will present the most effective solutions in relevant areas.

The prize fund for the first place is $10,000, for the second place – $5,000 and for the third place – $3,000.

The participation of Azerbaijani youth in an intellectual competition such as the Smart Karabakh hackathon, which is part of the restoration of the liberated territories, is very important and valuable.
