UK to end troop deployment to UN mission in Mali earlier than planned

The UK announced Monday that the country is ending troop deployment to the UN mission in Mali earlier than expected, with British Armed Forces Minister James Heappey saying that two coups in Mali in three years had “undermined” international efforts to maintain peace, according to Anadolu Agency.

“The Wagner Group is linked to mass human rights abuses, and the Malian government’s partnership with the Wagner Group is counterproductive to lasting stability and security in their region,” Heappey said in a statement to the House of Commons.

Since 2012, Mali has been battling growing violence orchestrated by militants in its northern and central regions targeting both soldiers and civilians.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution in 2013 to establish a Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) to support political processes in the country and carry out security-related tasks.

In 2014, the 12,000-strong UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) peacekeeping force began deployment in the troubled country.

The UK’s decision came following an announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron in February that his country is shifting its troops from Mali to Niger.

Zelenskyy says it’s ‘time to stop hostilities’, but ‘there will be no Minsk-3’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that it was time to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but Kiev will not sign Minsk 3 agreements, according to TASS.

“I am convinced that now is the time when <…> [hostilities] must and can be stopped,” he said, speaking via video link to the participants of the G20 summit.

Zelenskyy added that Ukraine would not agree to sign agreements similar to Minsk-3. According to him, Kiev has its own plan to “implement the peace formula,” which consists of ten points. Among them are ensuring nuclear, food and energy security, an exchange of prisoners of war according to the “all for all” formula, and the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Zelenskyy recalled that Kiev insisted on international security guarantees and had drafted a corresponding document. He called on the G20 participants to “cement key element of the postwar security architecture in the Euro-Atlantic space”, adding that the main outcome, according to Kiev’s notion, should be the signing of a “Kiev security treaty.” According to the Ukrainian leader, Kiev is ready to hold this event at any time, “even this year.”

The Ukrainian president also recalled that Kiev wanted to achieve an international mechanism to compensate Ukraine for its losses from the hostilities at the expense of Russian assets.
