Monday’s quakes moved Anatolian continent up to 10 meters: Italian scientist

The Anatolian continent moved up to 10 meters (nearly 33 feet) as a result of Monday’s powerful earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye, said an Italian seismologist on Tuesday, according to Anadolu Agency.

Speaking to Italy’s state-run ANSA news agency, Alessandro Amato of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), said that the earthquakes activated a new fault line on the border between Türkiye and Syria, which caused a displacement of the ground up to 10 meters.

“There was a transcurrent movement,” he said, adding that the ground slipped horizontally along the two edges of the fault line with an orientation to the left, in the direction of the Aegean Sea.

Separately, Tina Larsen, a senior researcher with the National Geological Surveys of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), said the tremors from the earthquake were felt in Denmark and Greenland, according to Greenland KNR broadcaster.

“When such a powerful earthquake occurs, the tremors travel from the area where the displacement has occurred in the underground, through the solid earth, and out into the whole world,” she said.

At least 6,234 people were killed and 37,011 others injured in Türkiye after two strong earthquakes on Monday jolted the southern part of the country, the country’s disaster agency said.

President Erdogan heading to southern Türkiye to inspect quake-hit areas

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday is going to head to Türkiye’s south to inspect post-quake efforts in disaster areas after Monday’s deadly earthquakes, according to Anadolu Agency.

“President Erdogan will go to the quake-affected area and follow the work closely,” the Communication Directorate said on Twitter.

At least 6,234 people were killed and 37,011 others injured in Türkiye after two strong earthquakes on Monday jolted the southern part of the country, according to the latest figures announced by the disaster agency on Wednesday.

The 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes, centered in the Kahramanmaras province, struck 10 provinces and affected more than 13 million people.

Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, felt the two major quakes that struck Türkiye in the space of less than 10 hours.

Erdogan is expected to visit Kahramanmaras’ city center first and then the Pazarcik district.

Later, the president is expected to head to Hatay for inspections.

For search and rescue operations to be carried out rapidly, Türkiye on Tuesday declared a state of emergency for three months in 10 provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa.

Six more vehicles of Russian peacekeepers move freely through protest area

The vehicles of the Russian peacekeepers passed freely through the peaceful protest area on the Lachin-Khankendi road.

The protesters ensured free passage for four supply vehicles and two passenger cars of the Russian peacekeepers moving from Khankendi towards Lachin to pass through the protest area.

This once again proves that allegations on protesters’ blocking the Khankendi-Lachin road are the disinformation and that the protesters ensure free movement of the vehicles used for humanitarian purposes.
