Alat:An airport being developed within the Alat Free Economic Zone is anticipated to be ready by next spring. This project, which involves local cargo carrier Silk Way Airlines, aims to establish significant logistics infrastructure in the area.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Valeh Alasgarov, Chairman of the Board of the Alat Free Economic Zone, announced the development at the 'German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026.' He described it as potentially the first airport located within a free economic zone.

The airport's construction commenced in April 2024, with 750 hectares of land allocated for the project. It is scheduled for completion by the end of this year and is expected to be operational by late March or early April 2027.

Initially, the airport will be capable of handling 500,000 tons of cargo annually. This capacity is projected to increase gradually to at least 2 million tons.
