Ambassador: Nakhchivan’s Connection to the Main Part of Azerbaijan Will Become Shorter with Aghbend-Kalala Bridge

Nakhchivan: The connection between Nakhchivan and the main part of Azerbaijan is set to become more efficient with the completion of the Aghbend-Kalala bridge, as stated by Mojtaba Demirchilou, the Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, during his visit to Nakhchivan.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the ambassador highlighted the presence of four operational border crossing points between Iran and Azerbaijan, located in Astara, Bilasuvar, Julfa, and Shahtakhti-Poladst. He revealed that a new crossing point will soon be operational in the Aghbend-Kalaleh region. Inspections of the Aghbend-Kalaleh automobile bridge have been conducted by both Azerbaijani and Iranian authorities, and completion is expected by the end of December. The development promises to enhance economic relations between the two nations, as Nakhchivan has historically relied on Iranian territory for connectivity with other Azerbaijani regions.

The ambassador mentioned that the new bridge will shorten the travel time between Nakhchivan and the main part of Azerbaijan. Infrastructure improvements are underway to address challenges posed by mountainous roads, particularly during winter. New tunnels are being constructed, and road expansions are in progress, aiming to bolster economic ties and facilitate Nakhchivan’s connection with the rest of Azerbaijan.

Mojtaba Demirchilou expressed satisfaction with the progress of Iran-Azerbaijan relations over the past 30 years, emphasizing the strategic importance of Nakhchivan in these bilateral ties. He recalled significant agreements made during a visit by Azerbaijan’s National Leader, Heydar Aliyev, to Iran in 1992, which have since fostered development in Nakhchivan-Iran and Iran-Azerbaijan relations. The ambassador noted that Azerbaijan’s recent territorial victories have opened new avenues for peace and stability, benefiting the entire region.
