Baku: In the rapidly changing landscape of global trade and politics, Azerbaijan is emerging as a critical player due to its strategic location and evolving foreign policy. As traditional trade routes face disruptions, Azerbaijan's geopolitical importance is growing, positioning it as a key architect in regional stability, energy security, and political dialogue.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Nicholas Gvozdev, an American expert on geopolitics and geoeconomics, emphasized Azerbaijan's pivotal role in both the Middle Corridor and the North-South Corridor. He noted that Azerbaijan's military and economic capabilities allow it to negotiate from a position of strength while maintaining a stance of neutrality. This neutrality is critical as it allows Azerbaijan to foster productive relations with major global powers without dependency.

Gvozdev highlighted the significance of Azerbaijan amid recent global upheavals, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and Middle Eastern tensions, which have disrupted direct connections between Europe and Eurasia and impacted trade routes. The Middle Corridor has thus gained importance in maintaining global economic stability.

The South Caucasus region, which has faced significant challenges in recent years, presents both risks and opportunities for sustainable security. Gvozdev pointed out that regional cooperation and the development of mutually beneficial relationships can enhance stability. He suggested looking to models like the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a potential framework for building cooperative power in the region.

Azerbaijan's multi-vector foreign policy, which involves engaging with various international actors while maintaining independence in its interactions, has been a cornerstone of its success. Gvozdev attributed Azerbaijan's effective foreign policy to its ability to expand cooperation with the West without sacrificing beneficial relations with countries like Russia, Iran, and Turkey.

In the realm of energy, Azerbaijan plays a crucial role by supplying oil and gas to Europe and other regions. Gvozdev underscored that Azerbaijan's energy policy not only fulfills its own needs but also secures energy transit for much of Eurasia, especially as other routes face challenges.

Regarding national security, Gvozdev recommended building strategic resilience through self-sufficiency and regional cooperation. He emphasized the importance of securing the Middle Corridor's infrastructure, with the Port of Baku serving as a vital intermodal link.

Gvozdev concluded by advocating for an organic model of integration for the South Caucasus countries, suggesting they leverage their central position in the Black-Caspian Sea macro-region to enhance regional cooperation and benefit as partners.
