Anacláudia Rossbach Highlights Baku’s Role as a Hub for Intercultural Dialogue

Baku: Baku can host difficult discussions and bring societies together by playing the role of a center of intercultural dialogue between the East and West, North and South, said Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and UN Deputy Secretary-General Anacláudia Rossbach at the opening ceremony of the 13th Global Baku Forum, APA reports. According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Anacláudia Rossbach emphasized the importance of the Global Baku Forum as a platform for open discussions about the state of the world and the future of multilateral cooperation. She highlighted the warning by the UN Secretary-General about the onset of a period of deep chaos, reinforcing the critical nature of peace and multilateralism in today's global context. Rossbach pointed out that 60% of the world's population currently resides in urban areas, a figure expected to rise. However, she expressed concern over the inadequacy of housing, noting that many people live without reliable housing, and more than a billion reside in informal settlements. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, acknowledging this housing crisis, is prioritizing adequate housing, land, and basic services in its strategic plan for 2026-2029. A new regional office in Istanbul aims to bolster support for sustainable urban development across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The Global Baku Forum garners significant international attention, especially after Azerbaijan hosted COP29, focusing on climate goals and finance. Rossbach praised Azerbaijan's initiative to declare 2026 as the 'Year of Urban Development and Architecture,' signaling a commitment to enhancing urban quality and professional expertise in city management. She underscored the role of well-planned cities in climate action and societal well-being, emphasizing the potential for cities to build trust and bridge political divides. Rossbach expressed confidence that the Global Baku Forum will aid in restoring communities, protecting vulnerable populations, a nd fostering sustainable urban environments, thus bridging global divides. She reiterated her readiness to collaborate towards achieving these goals.
