ANAS establishes special department to study toponyms of Western Azerbaijan and Karabakh

Department of Toponymy was established at the Institute of Linguistics of ANAS, based on the sector of toponomy, ANAS told APA.

Department of Toponomics will deal with toponyms of Western Azerbaijan and restoration of the onomastic landscape of territories liberated from occupation, issues of determining their names.

From time to time, toponyms belonging to Azerbaijani history in Karabakh were changed massively, some names were translated in the period of occupation, and some of them have been given new Armenian names.

The toponymic department will conduct studies in the direction of research on toponyms, and nationalization of names of toponyms liberated from occupation and renamed by Armenians.

The department will be headed by the leading researcher of the Institute of Linguistics, PhD in philology, associate professor Elchin Ismayilov.
