Armenian FM Comments on Withdrawal of Russian Border Guards from Armenia-Iran Border

Moscow: “The Armenia-Iran border has always been calm. There has never been a problem there,” stated Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following their talks.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Mirzoyan emphasized that the Armenia-Iran border will continue to be even more peaceful in the future. He highlighted the robust bilateral relations Armenia shares with Russia, describing them as allies with strong and friendly partnerships. He also noted the good neighborly and partnership relations with Iran and mentioned that Russia enjoys a good partnership with Iran as well. Mirzoyan expressed confidence that all involved countries would benefit from these collaborations.

Addressing the withdrawal of Russian border guards from the Armenia-Iran border, Mirzoyan explained that Russian border guards were involved temporarily at Armenia’s request during the early days of the country’s independence. He clarified that after this temporary period ended, Armenia thanked Russia and conveyed that they could now secure the border with Iran independently. Mirzoyan downplayed the situation, stating that there is no basis for a major political scandal emerging from this development.
