Birmingham:Aston Villa triumphed over Fenerbahce with a resounding 6-0 victory at Villa Park in Birmingham during the UEFA Champions League league phase match on Wednesday night. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley each contributed two goals, while Johan Manzambi and Tammy Abraham also found the net.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, this match was part of the league phase, a format that has replaced the traditional group stage in the competition. Clubs now face a variety of opponents rather than being confined to a fixed group.
The game saw an early breakthrough for Villa, with John McGinn narrowly missing a chance in the third minute, followed by Barkley's missed header from a corner in the fifth minute. Mbaye forced Fenerbahce's goalkeeper, Ederson, into action with a save in the seventh minute, and Manzambi's shot was blocked in the eighth. The opening goal came in the 12th minute when Manzambi scored from a corner, giving Villa a 1-0 lead.
Fenerbahce attempted to respond, with Vedat Muriqi testing Villa's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki twice, and Mason Greenwood's long-range effort also saved. However, Villa extended their lead in the 31st minute with Jackson's first goal, assisted by Boubacar Kamara. Jackson scored again in the 39th minute, with an assist from Barkley, securing a 3-0 lead by halftime.
Fenerbahce's closest opportunity came when Oguz Aydin hit the crossbar in the 34th minute, but Aston Villa maintained their firm control of the match, denying any goals from the opponents.
