Belem: Information on the participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) delegation in COP30 has been announced.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the 30th Session of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) was held in Belem, Brazil, from November 10-22, with the Leaders’ Summit taking place on November 6-7.
The Republic of Azerbaijan was represented at the Leaders’ Summit by a delegation led by the Speaker of the Milli Majlis, Sahiba Gafarova. The Speaker made a statement on behalf of Azerbaijan and held bilateral meetings with leaders from several countries. On the official opening day of COP30, the COP presidency was transferred from Azerbaijan to Brazil. Mukhtar Babayev, the COP29 Chairman and Representative of the President of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, spoke at the opening session, reporting on the achievements of COP29 in Baku and activities during Azerbaijan’s presidency.
The MFA delegation engaged in negotiations for decisions to be adopted at the conference’s conclusion. Azerbaijan was tasked with negotiating two important decisions. Under the authority of COP30 President Andre do Lago, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Yal§in Rafiyev and Brazilian Deputy Foreign Minister Mauricio Lyrio led negotiations with Turkey and Australia for hosting COP31, ultimately awarding the hosting rights to Trkiye.
Furthermore, the COP President mandated Azerbaijan and Norway to lead negotiations on the Global Stocktake (GST) of the Paris Agreement. Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev and Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen led these discussions. Their recommendations contributed to the adoption of relevant decisions.
The MFA delegation organized events on initiatives related to peace and migration, water, health, cities, and climate transparency. Azerbaijan co-hosted events on renewable energy, hydrogen, and agriculture initiatives. In line with the Baku Financial Target decision from COP29, Azerbaijan and Brazil presented a “Roadmap from Baku to Bel©m” at COP30, aiming to increase global climate finance to 1.3 trillion US dollars.
