Baku: On June 16, Ramin Mammadov, Chairman of the State Committee on Affairs with Religious Associations of Azerbaijan, held a meeting with George Jacob Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Holy See, and Father Laurent Basanese, Head of the Dicastery's Department for Relations with Muslims. The discussions centered on enhancing relations between Azerbaijan and the Holy See, with a focus on improving interreligious and intercultural dialogue.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Ramin Mammadov highlighted the efforts of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in establishing peace, security, and mutual trust in the region. He emphasized Azerbaijan's role in promoting international initiatives and described the Azerbaijani model of coexistence as one grounded in mutual respect, equality, and inclusiveness. Furthermore, Mammadov underscored the importance of collaboration between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Holy See, spearheaded by Azerbaijani First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, in advancing intercivilizational dialogue.
George Jacob Koovakad acknowledged the relevance of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the State Committee on Affairs with Religious Associations and the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue in strengthening bilateral relations. He commended Azerbaijan's efforts in preserving religious diversity and fostering traditions of tolerance, as well as its global contributions to interfaith dialogue.
The Vatican officials were also informed about the documentary film "Harmony," produced by Arzu Aliyeva, head of the Baku Media Center, which showcases Azerbaijan's traditions of coexistence and tolerance. Discussions included the possibility of screening the film in foreign countries, including the Vatican, to further promote these values.
The meeting concluded with discussions on joint initiatives to advance interreligious and intercultural dialogue, the role of cooperation among religious leaders and institutions in addressing global challenges, and other topics of mutual interest.
