Azerbaijan Celebrates 150th Anniversary of National Press with Focus on Future Development

Baku: By the order of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan is set to widely celebrate the 150th anniversary of its national press this year. Ahmad Ismayilov, Executive Director of the Media Development Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, discussed the ongoing media reforms and the future prospects of Azerbaijani journalism with APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Ismayilov emphasized the historical journey of the Azerbaijani national press, which began with the publication of the newspaper “Akinchi” in 1875 by Hasan bey Zardabi. The newspaper played a crucial role in uniting progressive intellectuals and promoting cultural progress. The abolition of censorship by National Leader Heydar Aliyev laid the foundation for independent media institutions and expanded pluralism in journalism. President Ilham Aliyev continues this legacy by prioritizing the development of a democratic and independent media.

Ismayilov highlighted the strategic initiatives of the Media Development Agency, which include stimulating new information technologies, enhancing journalist training, and fostering international cooperation. The establishment of a jubilee medal for the 150th anniversary of the Azerbaijani national press is seen as recognition of the significant contributions of modern Azerbaijani journalism.

The international reputation of Azerbaijani media is strengthening, as evidenced by the Shusha Global Media Forums, which facilitate discussions on disinformation and information security. President Aliyev’s participation in these forums underscores Azerbaijan’s commitment to conveying accurate information globally and supporting media professionals.

Media reforms have introduced significant changes, including tax exemptions for media entities and concessional mortgage loans for journalists. The Law ‘On Media’ has stimulated the production of original content, with a notable increase in unique materials. The Media Development Agency is committed to adapting to digital challenges and enhancing media cybersecurity.

The Agency’s collaboration with the Audiovisual Council to produce state-ordered audiovisual content aims to enrich the media landscape and support high-quality production. These initiatives are part of broader efforts to counter disinformation and strengthen Azerbaijan’s media in the face of external threats.

Through these reforms, Azerbaijan strives to maintain a resilient media environment that supports public enlightenment and national identity, ensuring the continued growth and development of its national press.
