Azerbaijan Celebrates 33 Years of Independence Restoration

BAKU: Today, Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of Restoration of Independence, marking 33 years since the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted the Constitutional Act on October 18, 1991, which reinstated the nation’s independence.

According to Trend News Agency, the Constitutional Act referenced both the Declaration of Independence of May 28, 1918, and the declaration of the Supreme Council on August 30, 1991. These documents affirmed that the Republic of Azerbaijan is the successor state to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. The nation had initially formed an independent republic in the early 20th century, and in 1991, it restored its sovereignty, continuing the legacy of its predecessor.

The celebration of this significant day comes for the fourth time since 1991, with the Azerbaijani people recognizing it as a victorious occasion that also marks the restoration of their territorial integrity. In May 1992, Azerbaijan approved its National Anthem, composed by Uzeyir Hajibeyli with lyrics by A
hmed Javad, followed shortly by the adoption of the State Emblem. This emblem features an eight-pointed star with flames at the center against the backdrop of the national flag colors.

Further commemorating the importance of this day, the Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a new law titled “On Independence Day” on October 15, 2021, which was promptly approved by President Ilham Aliyev. This legislation officially renamed October 18 from State Independence Day to Day of Restoration of Independence, emphasizing the day’s significance in Azerbaijan’s history.

The Day of Restoration of Independence continues to be a working day celebrated annually across the country, reflecting on the nation’s journey and its achievements in establishing and maintaining sovereignty.
