Today Azerbaijan celebrates Victory Day – the celebration of Azerbaijan’s victory in the Patriotic War of 2020. The war ended with the liberation of the territories of Azerbaijan occupied by Armenia in 1992-1994.

The holiday was established by the decree of the President of Azerbaijan dated December 2, 2020 and is timed to coincide with the liberation of the city of Shushi by the Azerbaijani army on November 8.

The war began on September 27, 2020 and continued until November 10 of the same year, when the President of Azerbaijan, the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Russia signed a cease-fire statement on November 10, 2020.

According to the statement, Armenia agreed to withdraw its troops from the territory of Azerbaijan in exchange for a ceasefire.
