Baku: Today, the first Tuesday of the Novruz holiday, known as Water Tuesday, is celebrated in Azerbaijan, APA reports. This Tuesday marks the beginning of preparations for the Novruz holiday, emphasizing the sacred nature of water.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Water Tuesday is also referred to as “Ezel Tuesday” and “Water Novruz.” In folk tradition, it is known as “early Tuesday,” “beautiful Tuesday,” and “flower Tuesday.” The day is marked by renewal and restoration activities involving water sources and reservoirs, along with various celebrations centered around water.
Water Tuesday is deeply rooted in the belief in the sanctity of water. Before dawn, people participate in rituals such as washing their faces, sprinkling water on each other, and jumping over water. There is a popular belief that those who interact with “new water” can transfer their ailments to it, remaining healthy throughout the year. Water symbolizes cleanliness, purity, and the beginning of life, and it is customary to place
clean water on the table for all family members to drink.
The celebration continues with Fire Tuesday on March 4, Wind Tuesday on March 11, and Earth Tuesday on March 18. In 2025, the Spring season will commence on March 20 at 13:01, with Novruz being celebrated on March 20-21 in Azerbaijan.
