Accra:Today marks 34 years since Azerbaijan restored its independence, following the adoption of the Constitutional Act "On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" on October 18, 1991.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, this pivotal act was passed by the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan, laying the groundwork for the nation's political and economic systems. It was based on earlier declarations, including the Declaration of Independence from May 28, 1918, and the Declaration on the Restoration of State Independence from August 30, 1991.
A nationwide referendum held on December 29, 1991, posed a single question to the citizens their support for the Constitutional Act. The referendum saw unanimous backing from the Azerbaijani people for the country's state independence.
In May 1992, Azerbaijan solidified its national identity by adopting its National Anthem, composed by Uzeyir Hajibeyov with lyrics by Ahmad Javad, along with the tricolor flag and the state emblem featuring an eight-pointed star with a flame.
October 18 has been celebrated as State Independence Day since 1992. Initially a non-working public holiday until 2006, it became a working day after amendments to the Labour Code. In 2021, a new law redefined May 28 as Independence Day, a non-working holiday, and October 18 as the Day of Restoration of Independence, a working holiday. Prior to this law, May 28 was known as Republic Day.
