Azerbaijan Commemorates Four Years of Control Over Iran Border

BAKU: Azerbaijan is marking the fourth anniversary of establishing full control over its border with Iran. On October 21, 2020, Azerbaijani forces liberated the village of Aghband in the Zangilan district, a pivotal moment that secured the state border with Iran.

According to Trend News Agency, President Ilham Aliyev commemorated the occasion by sharing a post on his social media account, emphasizing the significance of the village’s liberation. The Azerbaijani Army raised the national flag in Aghband, reporting this achievement to President Aliyev and the Armed Forces’ Commander-in-Chief. This event marked a key milestone in the 44-day Second Karabakh War, during which Azerbaijani forces reclaimed territories occupied by Armenia for 30 years, thereby restoring Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.

Following the war, President Aliyev proposed a peace initiative to Armenia aimed at fostering lasting regional stability. Armenia, however, rejected this offer and continued to engage in activities deemed as provoc
ations by Azerbaijan. In response, Azerbaijan undertook localized anti-terror operations, compelling Armenian separatists to surrender swiftly. The operations resulted in Armenian forces and illegal armed formations laying down their arms, vacating combat positions, and being disarmed. Subsequently, the separatist regime in Karabakh was dismantled, leading to the arrest of key separatist leaders and the complete restoration of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over its territory.
