Baku: Azerbaijan marks a pivotal moment in its history as it commemorates National Salvation Day. In June 1993, the nation faced a complex socio-political crisis that posed a genuine threat of civil war.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the crisis was intensified when military unit No. 709 in Ganja demonstrated disobedience, refusing to comply with the Ministry of Defense. In response, the government deployed military forces to Ganja to suppress the uprising. However, the lack of effective policies led to the expansion of the mutiny, which soon spiraled out of control. The rebellious military units advanced toward Baku, demanding a change in government.

The Azerbaijan Popular Front-Musavat government, unable to manage the escalating crisis and the looming threat of civil war, sought assistance from Heydar Aliyev. As a key socio-political figure and chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan, Aliyev responded to the urgent call from the people and authorities by arriving in Baku on June 9. Taking a significant risk, Aliyev traveled to Ganja and successfully negotiated to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

On June 15, 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan. This event marked the start of a new era in Azerbaijan's modern history, with June 15 being celebrated as National Salvation Day. Since 1998, this date has been recognized as a state holiday and a non-working day in Azerbaijan.
