Azerbaijan Commits to 32 New Power Plants in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur.

Karabakh: A total of 32 new power plants are currently under construction in Azerbaijan’s Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, a representative of the Green Energy Power Plant LLC, Emil Ibadov, announced at a recent ceremony. The ceremony marked the signing of a memorandum with the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company.

According to Trend News Agency, Emil Ibadov stated that these power stations, with a collective capacity of 270 megawatts, will ensure the full supply of green energy to Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur. Any surplus energy generated from these plants is planned to be exported abroad.

Statistics indicate that Azerbaijan’s technical potential for renewable energy sources is substantial, with an estimated 135 gigawatts available on land and 157 gigawatts in the Caspian Sea region. The economic potential for renewable energy is calculated at 27 gigawatts, encompassing 3,000 megawatts from wind energy, 23,000 megawatts from solar energy, and 380,000 megawatts from bioenergy. Additionally, mountain rivers con
tribute a potential of 520 megawatts.

Recent evaluations highlight that the Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur regions possess a combined solar and wind energy potential of 10 gigawatts. Districts such as Gubadli, Zangilan, Jabrayil, Khojavend, and Fuzuli are particularly suitable for solar energy, offering a technical potential that exceeds 7,200 megawatts. Furthermore, preliminary forecasts suggest that the mountainous areas of Lachin and Kalbajar districts could have a wind energy potential reaching up to 2,000 megawatts.
