Azerbaijan Condemns French Minister’s Remarks on International Law

BAKU: Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry has strongly criticized comments made by Jean-Noël Barrot, the French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, regarding Azerbaijan’s adherence to international law in its relations with Armenia. The ministry labeled the remarks as an indication of France’s superficial approach to international law and a biased attitude towards Azerbaijan.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Aykhan Hajizada, the spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded to Barrot’s statements made during an interview with France Inter. Hajizada asserted that Azerbaijan’s actions are rooted in international law and justice, dismissing the French minister’s claims as unsupported and absurd. He highlighted France’s lack of evidence for its allegations and noted the inconsistency in France’s stance, as it has not criticized Armenia’s actions against Azerbaijan.

Hajizada further criticized France for portraying Armenia as a victim, despite Armenia’s history of displacing nearly
a million Azerbaijanis, committing massacres, and violating human rights. He pointed out Armenia’s failure to allow the return of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis deported from Armenian territory. The spokesperson accused France of engaging in a destructive foreign policy in the region, which he claimed has been ineffective in various parts of the world.
