Baku: A new development has emerged in the criminal investigation led by the State Security Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan against Ramiz Mehdiyev and several others, on charges linked to ‘actions aimed at seizing state power.’ Abbas Abbasov, the former First Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, has been declared wanted in connection with the case, as reported by APA.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Abbasov is a key figure in the ongoing investigation. Previously shielded from accountability due to Mehdiyev’s influence, Abbasov is currently evading investigation by staying outside the country. This has prompted authorities to declare him wanted.
Abbasov served as the First Deputy Prime Minister from 1992 until his dismissal in 2006, after which he relocated to the Russian Federation. While in Russia, Abbasov engaged in activities aiming to exert influence over Azerbaijani diaspora structures through unlawful means.
In 2012, Abbasov founded the “Union of Azerbaijani Organizations in Russia,” pop
ularly known as the “Union of Billionaires.” Rustam Ibrahimbayov, a leader of the ‘National Council’ in Azerbaijan, was part of the Coordination Council of this union under Abbasov’s leadership. Despite warnings about the union’s intentions to influence Azerbaijani politics, Ibrahimbayov denied these claims.
Abbasov’s visits to Azerbaijan ceased in early 2013, coinciding with the emergence of the ‘National Council,’ as he feared repercussions for his actions. Investigation materials, including evidence of funds and dealings aimed at seizing power, have been compiled and will be presented in court.
Ramiz Mehdiyev faces charges under several articles of the Criminal Code, including actions aimed at seizing state power, treason, and property legalization through criminal means. The Sabail District Court of Baku has imposed house arrest on Mehdiyev for four months as a preventive measure.
